Thai Ambassador to Australia presented Thailand’s business and investment potential to businessmen in Canberra region.
On 18 November 2020, H.E. Ms. Busadee Santipitaks, Thai Ambassador to Australia participated as a speaker at a Diplomatic Business Luncheon talk entitled “Opportunities and challenges for international trade in post-COVID South-East Asia”, together with H.E. Mr. Kwok Fook Seng, Singapore High Commissioner, H.E. Ma. Hellen B. De La Vega, Philippines Ambassador to Australia, Indonesian Deputy Head of Mission to Australia and Director of Malaysian Investment Development Authority in Australia.
Attended by 50 businessmen and investors, the event was organised by the Canberra Business Chamber, Aspen Medical (Platinum Sponsor) in collaboration with ACT government, DFAT and AusTrade.
Ambassador Busadee gave an overview on how COVID-19 situation has affected Thailand, the outlook for 2021 and future opportunities. She also welcomed recent developments in the Thailand- Australia relations with the signing of the Joint Declaration on the Strategic Partnership between the Kingdom of Thailand and Australia on 13 November 2020 as well as regional economic cooperation on the signing of the RCEP on 15 November 2020, which will contribute to the economic recovery and resilience of the two countries and the region.
Ambassador Busadee also highlighted Thailand’s economic performance and outlook, which has been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic with the latest revised estimate by NESDC at 6% contraction in 2020 and a rebound to 3.5 – 4.5% in 2021, owing to more domestic consumption, private sector investment and increased exports.
The Ambassador also accentuated the investment potential and opportunity in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), which has been designed to accommodate the advanced technology- based industries, including health and well-being, digital business and smart logistics.
In terms of travel measure, in order to balance public health security and economic activities stimulation, Thailand gradually allowed additional groups of non-Thai nationals to enter the country, including businessmen and long-term travellers.
