NON-IMMIGRANT VISA CATEGORY “M” (M Visas) (Mass Media of Communication)

  1. Eligible Applicants for M Visas
    • This category of visa is issued to applicants who wish to enter the Kingdom to work as a film producer, journalist, or reporter.
    • Filming The applicant must request in advance approval from the Thailand Film Office, Department of Tourism, Ministry of Tourism and Sport.
    • To work as a journalist or reporter, the applicant must request in advance approval from the Department of Information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. For short term assignment, such as to cover news on natural disasters or international meetings/ sports competition which do not require media registration in advance, the applicant may apply for Non-Immigrant Visa Category “B”.
  1. M Visa Conditions
    • The M Visa is valid for a single entry into Thailand.
    • The M Visa is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. Travellers must enter Thailand within the said 90-day period. They will be allowed to stay in Thailand for a period of up to 90 days, counting from the date of entry. During the 90-day period of stay, if they wish to leave and re-enter Thailand, they are required to apply for a re-entry permit (single or multiple) before departure. If they leave Thailand without a re-entry permit, the current stay permit shall be considered void.
    • The extension of stay is at the discretion of the immigration officer. Extension application can be made at the Office of Immigration Bureau (visit for more information)
      • If the M Visa holder breaches the entry conditions, the stay permit will be revoked and he/she will be prohibited from entering Thailand in the future.
  1. M Visa Application Procedures
    • Each applicant must submit a complete application form together with the required documents* to the Royal Thai Embassy, Canberra by post or in person. Prepare required documents as follows:

3.1 Completed Visa Application Form 

3.2 One (1) passport-sized photograph affixed to the Visa Application Form

      • Size 3.5 x 4.5 cm.
      • White background and no older than 6 months

3.3 Passport

      • A minimum validity of six months from the date of planned entry into Thailand
      • Must have at least two empty pages
      • A copy of passport (bio data page)

3.4 Proof of an Australian Electronic Visa (only for non-Australian Nationals)

      • Visa grant page or VEVO check status page

3.5 Approval Note from the Government Agencies concerned in Thailand  

      • An approval from Thailand Film Office, Department of Tourism, Ministry of Tourism and Sport

3.6 Company registration and invitation letter

      • Copies of company documents must be signed by Board of Directors and affixed the seal of the company

3.7 Requirement from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Thailand (MFA)

    • An official letter issued by headquarters of the Department of Information, ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, containing the following information:
      • position of the applicant;
      • scope of work of the applicant;
      • period of employment of the applicant in Thailand;
      • request for the issuance of the appropriate visa; and
      • request for work permit or press card
      • Curriculum Vitae of the applicant
      • Company profile of the media entity
      • Proof of registration of the media entity with the competent authority in Thailand or abroad
      • A copy of the employment contract of the applicant (if applicable)
      • Portfolio of ten most recent media reports produced by the applicant
      • Police Clearance Certificate

3.10 Visa fee 

      • AUD 120 (Payment can be made by cash, debit, money order, or cheque, paid to “Royal Thai Embassy, Canberra”)

3.11 A Prepaid Return envelope with self-address


  1. M Visa processing times
    • Visa processing time is up to 5 business days.
    • Certain applications which require special consideration may take longer to process.
  1. Remarks
    • The Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra reserves the right to request additional documents as deemed necessary as well as reject any application without prejudice.
    • The applicants must provide genuine documents and information. If the applicants are found to provide false documents or give false information, their applications will be rejected and be reported for further determination of appropriate action and future prohibition to enter the Kingdom of Thailand.
    • Visa processing fees are non-refundable regardless outcome.
    • Visa processing fee is subject to change without prior notice.




    • The Royal Thai Embassy Canberra officers reserve the right to request additional documents as deemed necessary as well as reject any application without prejudice. Please note, the visa processing fees is non-refundable once the processing of the application begins – regardless of its outcome.
    • All visa fees can be paid by the exact amount of cash, money order, or bank cheque address to Royal Thai Embassy Canberra (personal/company cheque are not acceptable)
